10DTE-The Technology of 3d Printing and Laser Cutting Printers

The Technology of 3D Printing and Laser Cutting Printers

3D printing

3D Printing. Something that sounds ultimately futuristic, and is some way, scary. Well, believe it or not, this is a thing of the present and is already being used for daily purposes. So, what is 3D printing? 3D Printing is a modern printer that can create various programmable objects (even food) to repairing something. Usually a 3D printer uses either some type of easy-to-mold plastic or titanium. it melts down the material then orderly, it prints out the desired object from a moving arm. We used the 3D printer in class to create our original designs made on tinkercad. The personal one that I made was a futuristic E-bike lock. I intended that these would help all of those cyclists who had their own bike stolen off of them.

My opinion on 3D printers
I think that 3D printers are absolutely awesome! It is already cool enough to watch it print, then when the full product is finished, it is mind-blowing!

Laser Cutting

Laser cutters. Another 'futuristic invention' that has been brought to the present (no, not from a time traveler). It works as an electrical saw-like cutter that uses beams of lasers to cut through materials. This machine can cut through practically any acrylic plastics or wood. Laser cutters are beneficial in that they can be used to cut more accurate designs and more complex designs than would otherwise be hand-cut. In our Digital Technologies class, we used laser cutters to make out our own ideas off images we found on the world wide web. These creations varied from rubber band guns to name plaques.

My opinion on Laser cutters
I think that laser cutters are also an amazing invention. I can definitely see it being helpful in the future of furniture and decoration designs.

Passion Projects (Day 3)

Passion Projects (Day 3)

Today was our fourth day of passion projects and it was quite an interesting lesson (if you don't know what passion projects is- refer to my first day blog of Passion Projects). Today we learned about meanders and what they look like in everyday usage.

A meander is a repeated pattern or motif, usually constructed from a continuous line. Meanders are common decorative elements in ancient Greek and Roman art and often appear in mosaics and on pottery.

These are patterns that look quite similar to mazes and are made through various transformations and symmetry. We can see these patterns on fences, on ancient Greek relics, and even on carpets. Here are my two worksheets that I have done on meanders and I tried to make my own one (did not exactly go well).

I found these hard at first, but then found how easy it gets as I had just repeated the patterns, which leads to brain memory kicking in.

Passion Projects (Day 2)

Passion Projects (Day 2)

Moving on from Monday's tasks, we moved on to making hexahexaflexagons (a tough word to pronounce) to making Sonobe cubes and Sonobe Octahedrons which look mind-boggling! It was definitely more challenging than Monday's tasks, but in return, it was more fun!

Hexahexaflexagons and things alike!
These are cool two-sided shapes that look awesome and actually hide many other various designs when flexed out. Below is an example of a made tetra-tetra-flexagon showing all 4 designs.

Sonobe Origami
Sonobe origami is origami that is made by joining separate pieces into a larger design. This can be made into things like octahedrons and sonobe cubes which are glamorous to look at. Here is an example below of what a sonobe cube looks like.

Passion Projects (Day 1)

Passion Projects Day 1

Today we just started out a multi-day project called Passion Projects. In Passion Projects, Hornby High Students are asked to select a project based on their passions, which includes: Outdoor education, Music, Maths, and countless others. I have been put under Math Crafts, and in it, I learned about how to make Mobius strips and Menger sponges.

Mobius Strips
-Mobius strips are strips of paper that using maths, can be turned into various creations. This is done by adding loops to paper and cutting along sides or the middle to create additional rings attached to the original.

Menger Sponges
-A Menger sponge is not literally a sponge normally speaking, it looks like a sponge and is made up of cubes that have been slowly cut and divided smaller and smaller, with holes.

10Eng- Having friends is more important than having money

Having friends is more important than having money

Money. The one thing that everyone “needs”. Think about this: Can money buy you everlasting happiness? Can money buy you family? Can money buy you Friends? The answer that furiously pops out is “No”. So, would you pick either the luxury of cold-hard cash or having a group of close friends?

Is money better than friends? In my opinion-chosen mind, I believe truly that without friends to spend your money with, there is no need for money in this case. Imagine having the money to buy a brand new shirt that you have been itching to buy but have no friends to kindly “show-it-off”. You would have bored yourself out at the fact that you actually got it, and no one would care (or know) that you even had it. Think of this as being in a personal loop of buying, being happy in the moment, then being solely alone. Nothing you would want to go through, right? Friends are what makes spending money ‘“cool” so I’d hope to keep great friends instead of having that spectacular shirt.

So my opinion has been stated, but let’s just look at the other side of things and pretend that money is better than having friends. To start this off, here’s a quick scenario to get your head around. You are out at the local fast-food restaurant after a sizzling school day. You walk up to the counter to get a chilled frozen drink but you then realize that you have a bunch of friends with you moaning the same old phrase “Can I have some”? The answer to this situation would most-likely be to buy them one as well. This can be, in some sense, irritating. If these friends were never there, on the other hand, you could have the drink and keep some change all to yourself.  This may sound selfish, but who cares right? After all, there is no-one to spend the money on anyway.

After getting that off my chest, I think the answer is crystal clear. Friends play an important part in the way you use and share money, regardless of the situation. After reading this, do you think money can buy happiness? Can money buy family? Can money buy Friends? Money or Friends… what would be you choice?

10Eng-Q&A for Class Essay

Introduction
Catch’em: Too expensive, too uncomfortable, and too unsuitable.
Thesis: The Hornby High School uniform should be changed.
List of points: This is because it costs too much, it is unbearably irritating to wear, and it is unsuitable for the different seasons.

S] Some Hornby families can not afford the school uniform.
E] For example, some caregivers find the $130 jacket too excessive.
X] This is because they need the money for other necessities such as food, power, and rent. This is a terrible situation for substantially sized Whānau.
Y] Do we want our students to be starving, cold or homeless, just for the school uniform?

S] Not only is it too expensive, but it is extremely uncomfortable as well.
E] For instance, the socks, jersey, and skirts are all teeth-gnawingly trapping and itchy.
X] This distracts from learning. We want our students always ready-to-learn.
Y] This doesn’t suit its purpose, does it?

S] As well as the uniform being too expensive and uncomfortable, it is inappropriate for certain weather conditions.
E] We see this when students are wearing non-regulation jackets or jerseys to be warm when it is cold and wet.
X] “The skirts are far too cold on a wildly wet and windy winter’s day,” said Kirsty, a year 10 student.
Y] Jaymee - another year 10 student - commented that they could also end up dying from hypothermia if the uniform does not change.

Restate Thesis: Change the school uniform now!
Restate List of Points: Why? Because it costs too much, it is Horrible and intolerable to wear, and it is totally ill-equipped for New Zealand’s moody Mother Nature.
Punch Line: A better quality uniform will result in better quality learning.

10English-Teenagers need protecting from violent images in television, films and games

Teenagers need protecting from violent images in television, films, and games

A mystic figure lurks out of the gloomy dark, and with him comes a pointed object in his fragile and withered hand. He creepily approaches his victim and swoosh! The dagger had pierced his enemy’s skin and sunk right into his so-called “innocent” heart. We all know this scene too well, the bad guy strikes the good guy.

Most (and I mean most) modern shows, films and games have some sort of violence to it. Whether it be eliminating a player in the ever-growing Fortnite game or where Superman defeats the latest knock-off supervillain, there is a hint of violence in it. We all view things like this as if it’s normal, and this can especially target teenagers and our developing minds. For instance, let’s take films from around 30 years ago, where practically every scene was multi-generational friendly, and violence was basically just not a thing in movies. All of these movies seemed to have followed Christian values (meaning no violence, no discrimination and no sexual references outside of marriage). This has notably dropped over the decades, where now basically all modern things contain the opposite of the older ones.

For this argument, yes, I believe that the government and our elders should be more strict on what we can watch, and play. Take the “Restricted Label” for a fact. Its now-a-day meaning is “let your kids watch this if you allow them to”. This is wrong, the label is there for a reason, and the government should do more about it. Imagine this scene (get what I did there, Scene?) of where an innocent Mother buys their 12-year-old kid the latest Call of Duty release. The label is deemed R16 and the law restricts only a 16-year-old, or older, to play it. The child knows of this risk and relies most importantly on his mother, who probably has no idea what her child is playing. This is wrong and we need to do more to prevent and stop this altogether.

So, to come to a final conclusion, our elders and the government need to do more to raise restricted label awareness. The R label is there for a reason, and it’s not just an optional law. It is the law.

10DTE: Feedback on Growing Innovations NZ Challenge

My Thrilling Experience in The Growing Innovations NZ Challenge!

Introduction
For a part of this term, we have been working in self-chosen groups on a challenge called The Growing Innovations NZ Challenge. It is a challenge where groups are faced with a certain agriculture-task that is required to be or at least as close to being solved. We all had presented our ideas in our class in a pitch-type format which ended up being an awesome idea! Here is my feedback on what experiences we had whilst doing this, and how it was fun!

Groups:
-Moisty Billboard
-Special Needs
-Team 4
-W.O.R.D
-(The Rest I Don't Know)
Reflection
I thought that this challenge had gone well and it provided many opportunities in the areas of learning, developing, and creativity. I enjoyed working in self-chosen groups as you could actually feel comfortable in the groups that you were working with. In our groups, we were each presented with tasks, which we all contributed and my group made our own science board project which ended up looking amazing! We had to choose 2 enablers at a minimum and the ones that my group chose were NS(Network & Sensors) and HHP(High Hydrostatic Pressure). The challenge that my group was given was Maintaining Water Supply. Our task was to create a new way for farmers to locate a change in water pressure so that they can do what is needed to fix it. Using the NS and HHP enablers we created a prototype which was practically a smoke alarm turned and modified into a water tester. This prototype actually looked the part! We then presented this in a pitch-style presentation which went well and we spoke loudly and clearly to the target audience which was our DTE class.

I enjoyed the process of researching about this smoke alarm turned into a water detector as it looked like quite a cool and fancy process. My team was the Moisty Billboard team and in it were Johnny, Braxton, and I (The same as Normal). I chose these people because, last time in our app developing task, we worked well together and finished the task up to a good standard. We chose these enablers as it directly related to our topic being water, pressure, and changes in the water. Overall, I really enjoyed working in groups rather than individually, as it gets more work done and you feel comfortable with the group that you are working with. This was a great challenge!

Question
Have you heard or have even participated in this challenge?
What are your thoughts on a working leakage detector from a smoke alarm?

10Eng- Parents Should Do More To Keep Teens Healthy

Parents Should Do More To Keep Teens Healthy
The sound of the ambulance is in the distance… Time has slowed down… Isn’t this any parents nightmare? Teens just “are” the way they are, and speaking as one of us, keeping healthy isn’t exactly at the pinnacle of our long-adventurous list. Parents, it is not your fault, but I think that more should be done to keep teens healthy.

The stereotype teen wears rugged pants, has failed dreadlocks, and is a rebellious creature when he or she doesn't get their way. But in reality, we teenagers are just like adults except with a kick of uncontrollable adrenaline. This adrenaline, however, can cause some rather unsuspected, or unsafe actions that can lead to short or long-term health issues, which is something that no-one wants. I think that parents should try to make more of an effort (which I’m sure is great already) on the side of their children's health. All parents are awesome, but sometimes too much love can lead to bad habits or health. A tip for parents: try to limit gaming time for your children as this is modern-day cancer, as this can lead to newly-founded disorders such as the growing ‘gaming disorder’. Also, another helpful tip for parents is to watch what your child is eating, and make sure that they get the right vitamins and minerals that they need for the day. If this is a problem, try sneaking in a grated carrot into a patty, or some onions into a traditional soup.

Teenagers really aren’t that all different from more-experienced adults, so we should also be healthy like adults. In conclusion, parents are doing a great job of keeping their children happy. It just matters how they are keeping them happy, or else it could lead to a catastrophe.

10Health-Blogging on Spiritual Wellbeing

These are my answers to some questions revolving around my Taha Wairua (My spiritual well-being)

What did you think about spiritual well-being was before you started this unit?
-I thought that spiritual well-being was based on your religion and personal goals and beliefs which is pretty much the same as what I found out what it was about.

What is spiritual well-being about?
-Spiritual well-being is about all your beliefs, goals and religion being kept stable and happy so that no one else may alter or change your goals.

Why does everyone have differing spiritual wellbeing?
-Because not everyone has a religion or the same beliefs as other people.

What area of spiritual well-being do you need to improve on and why?
-I think that I can improve more in my goal setting so that I can strive to do bigger things in my life.

What is a goal you have about education?
-I have a goal in education to pass NCEA level 3 by year 13 so that I can get a good qualification for my desired job: an accountant.

10English-Should all students learn a second language

Introduction
Hello, Bonjour, Kamusta! Aren’t languages what bond us and bring us together no matter where we are or are going? Without languages, we would have limited communication and you wouldn’t have any idea what I am writing right now (that is… if I could write it). Here is my debate on the topic of whether or not every school student should learn a second language.

Arguments For
I strongly think yes, students should learn a second language that can help them in their near or far future. Whether they learn basic conversations or a whole language, it is going to benefit them later on in their life. Speaking as a student who has been through various language classes, I think that they should only do one specific other-language rather than a bunch of languages so they don’t get confused over the languages. A nice point of learning another language is that you can use it to make friends overseas or around your area that speak that language. Also, on the nice side of things, having another language up your sleeve can help you get those top-notch jobs that require someone speaking another language. Having another language is also good if someone needs an urgent translator to help out with the toughest of situations where no-one else can speak the language required. Although there are many positive things about learning another language, there are some doubtful down points of it.

Arguments Against
Learning another language could, in reality, be a waste of time as you may never end up using it or it may just become another old obsolete language that no one really speaks (for instance, Latin). Also, whilst taking classes for the language, you could have used that time for something more practical such as business lessons that have a more chance of helping you out in your future.

Conclusion
Languages are great, it really is just up to the speaker to make it work. I think that students should learn another language up to a desired level. This can increase many things, such as memorization, work opportunities, and of course, communication!

10SocialStudies-My Migration Video

Here is the link to my awesome MySimpleShow!

Migration: Push and Pull Factors

Migration is the constant act of people moving from one place to another for various reasons. These reasons include economic, social, natural or other factors. Pull factor is something that attracts someone to a particular place. Things that count as pull factors include nice scenery, family, work opportunities or fewer crowded-cities. A push factor is something that repels someone from a particular place. These include pollution, no sociality, loud places and poor scenery.

10Health-Learning Journal Blog

Today I learned about the names for the dimensions of the Hauora (The Maori word for Overall-Wellbeing) aspect. The dimensions are Physical, Mental, Social and Spiritual. My Physical Well Being is in a good condition as I have had no recent injuries or bruises which is always a bonus to everyday life :). The things that I do well to look after my taha tinana (physical health) are exercising every now and then, eating reasonably healthy and making sure I don't do anything to injure my self. The things that I could do better for my physical wellbeing are eating more fruits, and probably exercising more often. This dimension is one of the 4 dimensions that I do partially need to work on.

10English-Australians are better than New Zealanders

Australians are better than New Zealanders

Image result for australia vs new zealand

Introduction
The Kiwis vs the Aussies. This debate (or rather friendly-argument) has been going on for countless years. I mean, for New Zealanders there's no competition but we'll leave it at the facts to do the talking.

Sports
First of all, Who's better at modern-day sports, New Zealand or Australia? That's right, New Zealand! New Zealand has done awesome things in the past few years, including winning world cups and getting high marks and medals in various events around the globe. But we can at least give credit to the Australians for performing better than us in some events such as the Olympics or The Commonwealth Games. Overall, in sport, we are pretty tied.

Image result for australia vs new zealand

Slangs
Next, we're moving on to the conundrum of our slangs and languages. Both of our countries have specified words for certain objects such as us calling The Chilli Bin "Chilli Bin" whilst they say "Esky". Kiwis obviously use more relevant information towards slangs such as "jandals" for jandals whilst Aussies call them "thongs", Thongs!? who on earth invented that name?
Both countries are basically tied as well in this section as we both agree on our own slangs and probably will think that the other country speaks a foreign language when they use their slangs. So While your reading this why not go and get a nice cold drink out of a "CHILLI BIN".

Countries
Finally, We'll look at our actual countries themselves. Australia, probably 100,000 (not actually) times the size of New Zealand has animals such as Kangaroos, and Koalas whilst we have more native animals on the bird side of things. We have birds from the Kiwi, The Pukeko, to the cheeky Kea in our country, which all do certainly play a vital role in our history and culture. So while you're trying to find out the Australians secrets by being there, why not just take a peek at there animals as well and you may just be surprised!

Image result for australia vs new zealand country
Conclusion
The Kiwis Win... Only joking. Both of our countries are awesome in some aspects than the other and this is just what makes our competition fun! We dominate in Rugby, they dominate in The Olympics, this is just real world competition. Our Neighbours deserve gratitude for who they are, and I guess, so do we! Let Australians be Australians and New Zealanders be New Zealanders, this is just the way it is, no one is better!
