Summer Learning Journey Day 3 (week 3)

Day 3 (week 3)

Activity 1-Ready to Roll

In the 1970s there was a popular program on Tv that was called ready to roll. It was hosted by a man named Roger Gascoigne and he would introduce music videos then play them on TV. I was shown three different music videos that were shown in this programme and had to place each of them in a rank of 1-3.

Video 1 (Golden Harvest) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKC6CFr1wCk I would rate this video as second as it has a nice groovy beat to it but I did notice that a lot of the verses were repeated and it went a little too far.

Video 2 (Ray Columbus and The Invaders) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOc8l4keP5I&index=10&list=PLA5rAF2h_nlltc1J7QQkiR0LfIEU1EiM1 I would give this video the first place as it had a great intro and I liked the enthusiasm that the whole band had especially at the interlude.

Video 3 (New Zealand Under Dogs) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoxAc7gXtT0&index=7&list=PLA5rAF2h_nlltc1J7QQkiR0LfIEU1EiM1 I would give this video the third place only because the way it was sung was not really the best in my opinion. It had a country appeal to it which is obviously good for the country fans.

Activity 2-Bell Bottom Pants

For activity 2 I was shown that the fashion in the 1970s was unique. I have two pictures here of typical clothing in the 1970s and my task for today's second activity was to say two pros and two cons about what I think of these outfits.

Two Likes about it would be that it seems a lot more colourful than what we wear now so that would have improves their mood and secondly that it has a cool and funky look to it so your dressed for all occasions!
Two dislikes that I have about them would be that it seems too hot to always work in those long-sleeve business shirts and secondly that the patterns are quite strange and not really my type.

Bonus Activity- A Bilingual Schooling System

Before the year of 1972, New Zealand had only been teaching one language English. Until a Nga Tamatoa Member, Mrs Hana Jackson handed in a petition asking the New Zealand Government to also include the teaching of Te Reo Maori.  For today's bonus activity my task was to create a letter to my principal that would kindly ask him for a change in our school this is what I wrote:

Dear Principal,

There has been a problem going around for a long time and I think that maybe we could please have a change in how long school you would have to stay in school. I have noticed that people have the chance to drop out of school at the age of 16 and in some rare cases even 15! I can't imagine ever doing that because of the amount of learning and experiences I would have missed out. I think that it is best to raise the leaving age to 17 as it will secure more knowledge into these leavers and help them get a better way to start of at life. Please do consider this and I look forward to hearing back from you,

Thanks,Cameron

What a great series of responses to the activities. I was a teenager in the 1970s (and married in 1979). When I look back, I cringe at the fashion of the decade... I'm not that keen on the music either, and this is unusual, because for most people, the music of their teens is the music they love the most.
So, what music do you think you will take forward in your life as your 'favourite' stuff?

  2. Hi there Cameron,

Jade F from the Summer Learning Journey here! Great job on this blog post. I can really see from each activity, you really thought out each opinion really well; that shows me that you were really engaging in the videos and images given to you.

For activity one, I really liked how with each video clip you explained your thoughts and reasoning behind your ranking very clearly. I also agree with your opinion on the Ray Columbus and the Invaders, they were my favorite clip to watch too. I liked their energy and the music was very catchy. Would you start listening to more of this kind of music now if not what kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

With your second activity, well done with sharing your reasons on what you thought of the clothing in the 70's. It does have it's positive and negative aspects. I agree with your reason about not wanting to wear those long sleeved shirts and long pants if were a hot day, that wouldn't be comfortable at all and the patterns were quite interesting. I do also agree with your point on the colours, I really liked their vibrant colour scheme and I reckon it did brighten up their moods with wearing those colours.

With your bonus activity, I really enjoyed reading through your letter to the principal and what an interesting issue that you have chosen as well. You made a really valid point about increasing the leaving age and that they should leave after 17, I agree that it would benefit them a bit more academically if they stayed for an extra year.

Well done your blog post Cameron, I look forward to reading more of your blog!

    Cheers
    Jade F :)
