Summer Learning Journey Day 2 (week 4)

Day 2 (week 4)

Activity 1-Chasing Great

For Activity 1 I read about how New Zealand has had many sporting achievements in the past few years and one of the biggest would be the back to back wins we had in The Rugby World Cup 2011 and 2015! Both of these times the team (The All Blacks) were captained by a man named Richie McCaw and recently a movie named Chasing Great had been released to document about his fascinating Rugby career. My task was to watch the trailer for this movie [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In67DiC-U4E] then research about him and post three new things that I have learned about him.

1.The first time that Richie had been interested in Rugby was while watching the '87 world cup which his mother had said he had been glued to the TV and obviously had a lot of late nights!

2.He is actually a pilot in his spare time and was even made an honorary squadron leader of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Who could have thought a Rugby player always knows how to fly a plane?

3.He had also won the New Zealander player of the year in 2003. Wow, what an achievement to get!!!

Activity 2-Sporting Heroes

In the year of 2015, Lydia Ko from New Zealand had become the youngest women ever in the world to be the number one player in golf. Lots of people around the world see her as a sporting hero. My task was to tell you about who my sporting hero is and why.

My sporting hero would be Cristiano Ronaldo. I admire him that he is such a great football player and always gives his best at his games and he never gives up. I am also a football player and I like to try and learn from him via videos and images. He is a great team member for his football club Real Madrid and it would be completely different without him!

Bonus Activity-Shake it Off

For today's bonus activity I read about how lots of people are using Zumba as a fun and great way to exercise and I am sure you may have even tried it too! Zumba was brought in by a name called Alberto Perez who lives in Columbia. Zumba takes the likes of the following dances: Cumbia, Mambo, Hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, tango, and merengue. My task was to choose one of these dances then post three interesting facts about it.

Salsa
1.Salsa dance originated in the Carribean (no not in the movie). It was created by a man named Cuban Son who combined latin musicals and cuban music together to create Salsa.

2.Salsa has a lot of stepping movements in it and quite strangely when dancing the dancers top half is hardly moved by the stepping to create a still and also moving image.

3.This dance consists of a lot of weight shifting and doing this causes the dancers hips and legs to move.

  1. Hi there Cameron,

Jade F here from the Summer Learning Journey team. Excellent work on completing another set of activities.

Activity One- I’m impressed with the three interesting things you found about Richie McCaw, I especially liked the second point about how Richie McCaw was made an honorary squadron leader of Royal NZ Air Force! What an extraordinary achievement and an interesting combination of skills, a famous rugby player who can fly planes as well?

Activity Two- That’s awesome that your sporting hero is Cristiano Ronaldo, I’ve watched a few of football games on TV before and he is an amazing football player! Good on you for learning from him through videos, do you find it challenging to learn his moves?

Bonus Activity- What a cool choice of dance genre! You found some very interesting facts about salsa, I really liked the fact about how the dance consists of a lot of weight shifting and by doing that is what causes the dancers hips and legs to move! That was so interesting and so true, my friends and I like to dance for fun and we have done the salsa before and you never really think about the technical side of the movement but now thinking about it, the dance really is about shifting weight through your legs and hips! Have you tried the salsa dance before?

Keep up the good work Cameron and looking forward to reading more of your blog.

    Jade F :)

    1. Hi Jade

Yes it is such an odd combination of being a rugby player and a pilot but what two great talents to have! Ronaldo's moves are really challenging but it is cool to give it a go! Dancing is not really my thing and not especially the likes of Salsa!!!

      Thanks, Cameron

  2. Hi Cameron,

You've worked so hard today - well done!

I'm reading your blog from Canada, where I live, as I'm Rachel Williams' mom and one of the bloggers in the program.

I was really interested to learn that Richie McCaw is a pilot. What an interesting life he must have! And how wonderful that the Air Force is willing to accommodate his schedule so that he can be an All Black as well.

Nice to know that you're a footballer too. Well done you! I hope you have a great coach and great team mates - it makes sport so much more fun if those 2 pieces are in place, doesn't it? You sound like a dedicated athlete as you're willing to try to learn by watching video of professional athletes in action. Good for you.

And you chose to write about Salsa dancing. Have you ever tried it? It's a high energy dance style, for sure! We recently had a Salsa dancing event in our small town as a fund-raiser for building schools in Central America. A dance troupe came and demonstrated the dance and then offered lessons - so fun!! It helps to have really flexible hips!!

Keep up your great efforts in the Summer Learning Program and I hope you're having a wonderful summer break!

    1. Hi Leslie!

Yes it is cool to see that even Richie can fit in being a Royal Pilot and a top Rugby Player at the same time! Football is a nice sport as it uses all your muscles to keep the player fit! Salsa is not really a dance I would want to try but you never know!

      Thanks, Cameron
