Activity 1-Meat and Three veg
We have successfully made it to week 3 of the summer learning journey and we have finished half of it already!!! Time has gone so fast. For today's activity 1 I read about how in the 1950s things had settled down in New Zealand and there were no more major wars going on and people could live a normal life. It was usual for women to stay home and raise their children and they were called housewives. The typical rule for cooking meals was to follow the meat and 3 vegetables rule. This meant that on the plate would be a piece of meat and 3 different types of vegetables. My challenge was to explain why or why not I would enjoy eating a meal like this and what my thoughts are on this rule.
I would actually not mind this rule as it is pretty much what I usually have in front of me at the dinner table. I always love having some meat to give me protein and 3 types of vegetables is a great way to keep healthy. I truly would like to eat something with this rule, I mean I already do pretty much!
Activity 2-What's in a Name?
For activity 2 I read about how in the 1950s New Zealand's population had gone up by a huge 400,000! This is widely known under the name of the baby boom. These were the most popular Kiwi baby names around this time:
GIRLS BOYS
Christine John
Susan David
Margaret Peter
Judith Michael
Jennifer Robert
My task was to say if any of these names were in my school and actually to my amazement there is absolutely no-one with one of these names that I know of in my school!!! What a strange thing! The most popular names in my school would be:
Girls Boys
Sophie Caleb
Sam/Samantha Vince/Vincent
Paige Matthew
Bonus Activity-Snail Mail
For today's bonus activity I read about how most people in the 1950s communicated by mail. It was estimated that New Zealanders sent over 200 million letters to each other between the years of 1950-1960! My task for the bonus activity was to create a front of a postcard that I could send to a friend which includes some Kiwiana. Here is what I came up with:
This Postcard cover represents that a beach is an awesome place to spend time in New Zealand and it always great to meet new people there! I added in the picnic basket which accompanies the beach, and what could refresh you more than a can of cold L&P on a hot day? Nothing! I added in the kiwi as it is our native bird and kiwi fruit as a little joke because the kiwi is looking at it with a worried look.

Hi there Cameron,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the blog post! I really enjoyed reading through your activities and you made some very good points in your first activity about the one meat to three veges rule! I think it's a good balance to have for dinner and funny enough I already do it at home too! What do you say would be your favourite meat and three veges to have for dinner? Mine would be steak with potato, carrots and broccoli!
It's interesting how popular names change very quickly over the years and that is amazing that there is no one in your class with any of the popular names from the 1950's! I think about when I was in school and it's funny because I also knew a lot of Sam's, Matthew's and Sophie's at school as well!
I really loved your Kiwiana postcard, it really showed the key elements to what makes a New Zealand summer so specials for us kiwis! I thought it was quite funny how you have the kiwi bird looking at the kiwifruit nervously. What would be your favourite thing about summer in NZ? Mine would definitely be going to the beach for a picnic!
Looking forward to hearing from you soon and keep up the awesome blogging!
