Summer Learning Journey Day 3 (week 2)

Day 3 (week 2)

Activity 1-Dealing with stress

I read about how in the 1930s there was a financial crisis which led to what was called the great depression. This caused more than 30% of New Zealanders to live without a job and it was a huge financial depression. My task for activity 1 was to say some ways that I would recommend to do to relieve stress and relax! My first activity would be playing some sort of instrument. Playing an instrument relaxes you as you sink into the music and being a pianist myself it really does get you in a happy mood! My second tip would be to talk with either your family or friends. Just talk about anything really but always say positive things and you will too eventually feel positive!

Activity 2-Offering a helping hand

In the great depression, people could hardly ever find jobs in New Zealand or even overseas so it was really hard to feed families and especially the larger ones! My task was to imagine that I was living in the 1930s and I had to list 3 things that I would do to help fundraise money for families to buy their food and clothing!

1.I would run a sausage sizzle. Yes, it is obviously a classic idea but because of that wealthy people would definitely come to buy themselves some lunch and then the ones who cant afford to get one will get some of the money earned from the profit.

2.I would run a donation collection box which is where I would walk around different houses in a wealthy part of the country and ask if they would be so kind to donate either some old clothing or some unused food for the families.

3.I would make an old or non-fitting clothes bin that people can donate their old clothes to help out the families. Yes, it may be old clothes but it is always better to have something rather than absolutely nothing!

Bonus Activity-Paying it forward

In the middle of the 1930s thing started to rise up as people were more able to find jobs and earn money more than the previous years. Today's bonus activity was to imagine that I travelled back to the time of the 1930s and were to visit one of the families in those times and list what things I would bring to give to them.

I would definitely bring them some modern clothes and let them try out the new trend and see how they like it. I would have brought them some snacks like the L&P chocolate bar and passionfruit mountain dew because they are too good not to bring! Lastly, I would have brought them a tv, a DVD player and some Disney movies to entertain their children.

  1. Hi Cameron,

You've put a lot of thought and effort into your answers for these activities - good on you! And I appreciate that you've introduced your blog with information about the nature of the activity you're undertaking. Very good!

I think your ideas about how to lend a hand in the Depression are very sound. In fact, because my parents grew up during the Great Depression in Toronto, Canada, I can say that all of your ideas were put into place. There were many donation bins all over the city and people were very generous about donating their used clothing. Money collections were taken up frequently within communities, especially in order to help families in which no one could get a well-paying job and the children were hungry. And people undertook all kinds of creative ways in order to earn a living. When my father and his brother were in high school they decided to learn how to be bee-keepers and so they rented land outside of the city, borrowed bee-keeping clothing and equipment and rode their bikes back and forth every day to manage the bee hives that were miles from their home. They sold a lot of the honey and kept a portion of it for 'sugar' in their home.
Good work, Cameron. I hope you'll continue to blog and I wish you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to come.

  2. Hi Cameron,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey team! Great to see you are keeping up a great standard of work! Well done.

Activity 1: What great ideas! I am a pianist as well and enjoy playing the piano when I get stressed. My favourite song to play when I am stressed in Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. It's quite a sad song but it makes me feel better by the time I've finished it.

Activity 2: Good thinking. Those are great ideas and all of them would be very helpful to the families in need. Sausage sizzles are always a winner. Have you heard the saying one mans rubbish is another mans treasure? I think that is relevant to what you are saying about the second-hand clothes! Great work!

Bonus activity: Once again, more great ideas! L&P chocolate is a must! I wonder what people from the 1930s would have said if they had of seen a DVD player? They would have been amazed by the idea! I'm sure it would have entertained the adults for hours as well, trying to figure out how it worked.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over summer. Keep up the good work!
    Cheers,
    Ruby.
