Summer Learning Journey Day 1

I have taken part in a "Summer Learning Journey" course for my school which is done in my holidays. It is a course which will gradually improve my blogging skills and will let me learn some more general knowledge questions. Here is the link to the site if you would like some more info about this:https://sites.google.com/site/summerlearningjourney/

Activity 1
For activity 1 (day 1) we were shown a story about Maui a famous Maori legend and once we had read this we had to write three interesting things about him.

-Maui always wanted to go fishing with his brothers but they never allowed him
-He was a very skinny person
-He wanted to prove that he was a worthy fisherman to his fellow brothers

Activity  2
This activity was to write a letter to a friend and tell them about what your journey was like coming to New Zealand.

Hey, friend

My trip going out to a new country has honestly been extremely rocky and anonymous as we don't know where we may actually land. I was really looking forward to reaching a new land as there would have been new types of kai to eat and new types of scenery to explore. I felt seasick for the first time while on the boat and it was NOT something you would want to experience! I saw a large dolphin swim right up to my waka as if it wanted to say hi! Yes it was awesome but at the end of this long journey I was completely fatigued.

Here is a photo of all of us arriving eagerly to the country to New Zealand:

I am hoping that one day you too could meet us here in New Zealand! keep safe!

Bonus Activity
We were shown a video about what a waka ama race is and here is the link to that video where I learned my information from:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhLEfhquDsI

I would not really enjoy going on a waka for the sake of racing as I see it as a relaxing type of boat to go on and would prefer cruising on one than competitively racing. I think wakas were not intended for racing and were mainly intended for travelling purposes only. It may be interesting to watch it for me but I wouldn't really do that my self but maybe find an alternative like sailing or yachting.

What a great start .. your blog is perhaps apart of your own journey in which you will lose sight of your 'land' and venture into those unknowns. How do you feel as you face the challenge?

    1. Hi Mr Sutton!

Thanks you for saying that it was a great start to my blog! I felt that it would be along time and very time consuming... but in the end it had past so quickly and I am very grateful to have had an opportunity to take part in it!

      Thanks, Cameron

  2. Hi there Cameron,

Welcome to the Summer Learning Journey programme! My name is Jade F and I am one of the bloggers for your school cluster this summer break. You’ve made an awesome start on your summer learning journey.

You’ve made some good points in your facts about Maui, like how he wanted to join in with his brothers with going out fishing but they wouldn’t allow him. Maybe something to think about would be how you think Maui felt about being left out and how would you describe his personality through reading about his further actions he took in the story? Was he brave? Clever maybe?

Great job in your second activity with your letter to a friend. And you are totally right with feeling sea sick on the waka, I would feel the same way!

With Waka Ama, it is a popular competitive sport throughout the pacific islands and I like to think of it as another version of kayaking or dragon boating; so it would awesome exercise! But I agree with you on how much work you would have to put into Waka Ama! Have you ever done any boating sports before? I used to dragon boating in school and loved it.

Hope to hear from you soon Cameron and keep up the blogging!
    Jade F :)

    1. Hi Jade!

Thanks for your thoughtful and positive comments on my blog and yes I would have really felt sick if I had gone on a waka for a long time (not to mention home sick!) I have not done any boating sports but one day would really like to!

      Thanks, Cameron

  3. Morena Cameron.

Clare here from the Summer Learning Journey. Its great to see that you are blogging alot over the Summer and getting all the tasks done to a really high standard.

Have you seen the moana movie? I like how you have taken this image and used it to grab the readers attention to read more of this blog post.

You have created a really comprehensive letter here showing what it would be like on a Waka and traveling to another place. You have thoughts carefully about your audience and including an image has really helped with this.
Do you have a favorite Maui story? Mine is Maui and the Sun. It always has incredible illustrations in the books I read of this story.

Keep up this fantastic blogging and don't forget to comment on other peoples blogs too. Its so great to get feedback on the work you do.

    1. Hi Clare!

Thanks for your positive comments on my blog! My favourite story would actually also be Maui and the sun as I remember back when I was in Primary school I would issue out these books form the school library and I was always fascinated with the illustrations and the stories behind it!

      Thanks, Cameron

  4. Hi Lauren!

That's cool how you liked me doing learning in the holidays and it's great to see you have done the summer learning journey as well! The Maui picture seems to have a different look to him because he is nowhere near skinny! Yes it would be weird being skinny but needing a lot of strength.

    Thanks, Cameron
